The unemployment rate rose from 9.8 to 10.2 percent in October, and nonfarm payroll employment continued to decline (-190,000), the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported yestoday.
In October, the number of unemployed persons increased by 558,000 to 15.7 million. The unemployment rate rose by 0.4 percentage point to 10.2 percent, the highest rate since April 1983. Since the start of the recession in December 2007, the number of unemployed persons has risen by 8.2 million, and the unemployment rate has grown by 5.3 percentage points.

New Unemployment Compensation Extension Act Passed
The U.S. Senate late Wednesday unanimously passed the new Unemployment Compensation Extension Act on a cloture vote 97-1 and the president is planning to quickly sign the legislation on Friday.
The New Unemployment Compensation Extension will provide up to 14 additional weeks of emergency unemployment benefits for all 50 states and another six weeks -- for a total of 20 weeks -- of benefits for states where unemployment is 8.5 percent or higher.
